MUSIC REVIEW OVERSPILL!

For some reason (and it's a pretty boring one) I had these spare, so here they are.
Souvaris – A Hat Without being too brazen about it, Souvaris confidently tick the sound-a-like boxes marked Tortoise, Battles, Karate and Mogwai with this, their sophomore effort for Gringo records. So yes, while strictly speaking there’s absolutely nothing new about the Knebworth quintet’s thoughtful, slowly building, emotive instrumentalism there is nevertheless still much to admire. Fiercely intricate and heavy on the free-jazz noodling throughout, they’re one of the few bands from this incredibly popular and increasingly tired-sounding musical movement that doesn’t make you wish you’d just f—ked it all off and bought the Girl’s Aloud album instead. I mean they even have a song named after Ted Danson for god’s sake.
Blackstrobe – Burn Your Own Church Originally a remixing duo for hire, two have now become a fully functioning live band of four as the French dance outfit have gone and decided to add a bit of edge to their pulsing, Euro electro oeuvre. Though this is allegedly due to one of them being a big Norwegian Black Metal fan, hence the title, the actual results still err towards the paler side of the musical fence, and Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails in particular. Unfathomably managing to combine guitars and a soup son of moodiness with full pelt, wave your hands in air, Class A hedonism without sounding utterly toss is in itself no mean feat. But to be positively listenable, that’s some Houdini s—t.
